Five members of staff from St Michael’s Hospice, Hereford, visit MHC

Five members of staff from St Michael’s Hospice in Hereford travelled together in October 2024 to visit the Hospice in Muheza and learn about the provision of palliative care in a resource-poor setting, and to continue the link between the two hospices which have had a close relationship for many years.

“What we witnessed during our trip to Muheza was a group of talented, dedicated professionals working wonders in their community,” said Dr Jim Burtonwood, the Lead Specialist Doctor at St Michael’s. “In that respect, it is very similar to life back home at St Michael’s. Where it differs though, is when it comes to things we take for granted.

“Things like a consistent supply of vital drugs; tarmacked roads, and basic training opportunities to enhance learning and understanding”

The group from Hereford saw out- patients clinics including a breast screening and a cervical screening clinic. They also joined in the fun and games of Kids Club, where HIV positive children are seen regularly, monitored and encouraged to take their medication.
